What regards to wildlife, the Algarve will surprise you. About 395 bird species can be observed in the Algarve, this means that around 95% of all bird species observed in Portugal can be seen in the region in a certain time of the year. Along the coast you can also spot different species of cetaceans. Moreover, a very special reptile inhabits in the Ria Formosa Natural Park: the Mediterranean chameleon.

The day will begin early so you can fully enjoy the birdwatching activity. Your guide will pick you up at the hotel for a full-day activity including stops at Quinta de Marim, Ludo and Lagoa dos Salgados. On these three places you can observe a rich variety of bird species, such as, Little Bittern, Purple Heron, several species of grebes and ducks, Purple Swamphen (the symbol of the park), Black-winged Stilt, Kentish Plover, Collared Pratincole, Avocet, Little Tern, Great Reed Warbler, Azure-winged Magpie, Eurasian Hoopoe and Bee-eater.
Your boat tour for dolphin watching in the wild, starts in Olhão harbour. Keep in mind that the dolphin watching cannot be guaranteed 100%. However, a professional skipper will strive to provide the sighting of these animals. The most sighted are the common dolphin and the bottle nose dolphin. During the boat tour, you will all see different bird species, enjoy the coastline views and discover the lagoon system of Ria Formosa Natural Park. Have the rest of the morning and evening free.
After breakfast, make your way to Olhão to pick-up your bikes and meet your guide. A true “Olhanense” will guide you through Quinta de Marim, where you will find out some local wildlife, see roman ruins and enjoy an amazing view from the top of the watermill. Among all park fauna, we highlight the peculiar Uca tangeri, a species of fiddler crab that lives in the eastern Atlantic Ocean, and the Mediterranean chameleon, witch in Portugal, can only be found in the South, being the Ria Formosa its favourite habitat.
